Q&A - frequently asked questions
Q: Does a Koolie need herding work to be satisfied?
A: Koolie needs activity and mental stimulation, but there are many ways to fill those needs e.g. dog sports, learning tricks or during everyday obedience.
Q: Does a koolie need a lot of exercise? Does it need to run a few hours a day?
A: Koolie is active and likes to run and explore new places but does not need to do it every day. If you take your dog for a long walk to the beach or the forest 3-4 times a week, the need for exercise will be met.
Q: Do I need to find time to train (sports, nosework, tricks, obedience) every day?
A: Koolie is active and likes to run and explore new places but does not need to do it every day. If you take your dog for a long walk to the beach or the forest 3-4 times a week, the need for exercise will be met.
Q: Is a Koolie a hunter? Does it chase birds, deer or foxes?
A: As a rule, no. They don't overreact to wild animals but they are curious so they may want to check or bark. I haven't noticed them following wild animals.
Q: Will a Koolie be a good guard dog?
A: Well, he will probably let you know by barking when a stranger shows up at your gate, but he will not fight if a stranger tries to invade your yard. It is not that kind of breed.
Q: Does Koolie function well in a big city?
A: Koolie has a sensitive nervous system. As a herding breed, it reacts quickly to movement. There are a lot of different things in the city - cars, bikes, crowds of people, tight spaces, loud noises. Such an environment can lead to overstimulation and excessive reactions. Therefore, it is worth taking care of relaxing walks outside the city and providing it with a quiet place to sleep at home and rest so that its nervous system can stay balanced.
Q: Can a koolie live with a cat?
A: Koolies are very friendly and usually get along very well with all the animals they live in the house. However, you should take care of proper introduction and the quiet, private space of each animal.
